Rhedodd y daith reilffordd gyntaf yn y byd 9 milltir o`r gwaith haearn ym Mhenydarren i Gamlas Merthyr-Caerdydd

        The first railway journey in the world ran 9 miles from the ironworks at Penydarren to the Merthyr-Cardiff Canal

Yn 1803, daeth Samuel Homfray â Richard Trevithick i`w waith haearn Penydarren ym Merthyr Tudful

         In 1803, Samuel Homfray brought Richard Trevithick to his Penydarren ironworks at Merthyr Tydfil

Roedd gan Homfray ddiddordeb yn yr injans stêm yr oedd Trevithick wedi`u datblygu

         Homfray was interested in the steam engines that Trevithick had developed

Anogodd Homfrey fe i adeiladu locomotif i deithio ar hyd y dramffordd o Benydarren i lanfa`r gamlas yn Abercynon

         Homfrey encouraged him to build a locomotive to travel along the tramroad from Penydarren to the canal wharf at Abercynon

Dechreuodd Trevithick weithio ar y locomotif ac erbyn mis Chwefror 1804 roedd wedi`i gwblhau

         Trevithick started work on the locomotive and by February 1804 it was completed

Roedd Richard Crawshay, perchennog gwaith haearn Cyfarthfa gerllaw, yn sicr na fyddai`r injan yn llwyddiannus

         Richard Crawshay, owner of the nearby Cyfarthfa ironworks, was sure that the engine would not be successful

Fe wnaeth Crawshay betio 500 gini na allai`r injan dynnu deg tunnell o haearn i Abercynon, a thynnu`r wagenni gwag yn ôl

         Crawshay bet 500 guineas that the engine could not haul ten tons of iron to Abercynon, and haul the empty wagons back

Roedd y rhediad cyntaf ar 21 Chwefror, a thynnodd yr injan ddeg tunnell o haearn mewn pum wagen, gyda saith deg o ddynion yn reidio arnyn nhw am y daith gyfan

         The first run was on 21 February, and the engine pulled ten tons of iron in five wagons, with seventy men riding on them for the whole of the journey

Aeth yr injan bron i bum milltir yr awr

         The engine went nearly five miles an hour

Yn anffodus, ar y daith yn ôl torrodd bollt a bu`n rhaid gwneud atgyweiriadau

         Unfortunately, on the return journey a bolt broke and reapirs had to be carried out

Ni chyrhaeddodd yr injan yn ôl i Benydarren tan y diwrnod canlynol

         The engine did not get back to Penydarren until the following day

Rhoddodd hyn reswm i Crawshay honni nad oedd y rhediad wedi`i gwblhau

         This gave Crawshay reason to claim that the run had not been completed

Yn anffodus roedd yr injan yn rhy drwm ar gyfer y cledrau

         Unfortunately the engine was too heavy for the rails

Fe`i cymerwyd allan o wasanaeth a`i defnyddio i yrru morthwyl gefail yng ngwaith Penydarren

         It was taken out of service and used to drive a forge hammer at the Penydarren works

Gallwn ddweud, er hynny, mai Richard Trevithick oedd tad y rheilffyrdd

         We can, however, say that Richard Trevithick was the father of the railways
